wrap-up of GIP Shanghai :: Jan-Jul 2008

Share it Please

it has been one full month back, to the time when i've landed at T1. i'll never forget the experience I had throughout the return trip. it was different, and i vow never to travel alone again - well, except for working trips if there's no choice...

back in singapore, life has gone back to its natural course. study + hang out. life doesnt seem as much interesting as how it had been in the big plot of Yellow land. the friendship that we forged while we were there, the people whom i've gotten to know, all seem to fall back in their own respective life. 1 month from my return then, i shall recollect and have an aftermath on the trip.. here it goes..

*ps : put your cursor over the pic if you wanna see the captions

the people...

the 三号人 guys :: ahlum, yuyu aka penguin, maomao, grey, chips, the-one-who-shall-not-be-named. pls ignore the odd one out.. nope, i'm not being evil.. that just happens you know...

ahlum, i must really say you're the 最可怜 of all. always bullied by the rest. hahaha but dont worry, you're not as 浦西 as they say ;)

chips! i know a cheese, and now a chips. what's next? hahaha. you're a cheery guy, more than most of the other 三号s.. so i hope you wont let ur low time affect your general happiness level! (i hope you get me if you do see this >.<)

grey. Grey grEy greY. hahaha we sure did not give you a wrong name =P you've been a really great and fun company, but i guess those times has passed and we're back to being busy in our own separate lives. and now if you think back, what i say may be true, about the spore food hunts you had talked abt back there. remember? hahaha! how can there be when i have difficulty even to get my SD card from u! omg lol~

不要冒冒然! i'll miss calling this name.. its funny how much fun/joy i derive from just calling it. hahaha! i (we) really think you're a living cartoon, so funny and cheerful! =) oh yeah, if you see this, please dont forget that i'm still waiting for my comic drawing, and to see your comic strip on your famous 世上有 四种人 三种人…… wahahhaa

yuyu! hahahha i doubt i'll ever call you this in sch. so weird. lol~ guess its one of the things that will stay in SH. well, i dunno whether i can say that i've got to know you very much further from this trip, but i'll always remember that i keep telling you the two words.. 认真! hahahha you'll know in which area..

the 三号人 girls :: oli aka son aka CP1, me aka papa cm aka AL, mel aka mama aka BP, weiL aka daughter aka CP2. this is in the earlier times at Shanghai's Nanjing Road (irony? hahaha)

oli.. sometimes you worry too much beyond what you could ethically could have for others. of coz that's not something bad, but its only detrimental to your own personal turmoil. aeh... hahaha! anyway, i hope you're happier now =) ps: its a pity if the 三号人 joke is brought to class. but dont worry i wont add oil. hahahha

mama, tho i very seldom call you that. you've been really really busy since you were back huh, sososo hard to meet you up. only maos can. hahahah! okokie, i dont wanna be chopped. many say on the first encounter with us that we look alike, but we all know how very different we are. really, i admire your independence you know =)

wei ar.. think i dont really know you as well as i could have ba.. there was one sentence you said in our last talk that night, in that we choose our friends, is right. well, but thinking back, i really did enjoy my time with you on the backpacking trip with the guys.. i quoted that coz i think that was the time we really had the most interaction ba.. hahahha

the Venture guys.. miss their rubbish-es. hahhaha

mr O, 郭先生, and mr da. hahahha! a bunch of funny dudes who alwayssss like to bully me - though i know very well with kind intentions. i think i'm missing abit of their witchimiya-ing. lol~ mr O, remembered for donating me breakfast and most for the one who most bullies me. hahaha! 郭先生, remembered for his exclamations and exasperation on my talking habbits, as well as how he loves to treat people to ice-creams when he is stressed up at work. *even ice-creams in spore is so ex! i cant find one at 20cents. sobs. can i import from the Yellow land? hahahah* Mr Da, often at 'loggerheads' coz he always wanna puke blood at many of the things i say. but he's one of the nicer one coz at least he doesnt bully me that much, and we have much to chat abt. hahaha! oh yeah, almost forgot that we have a common type of enemy whom(s) we so often talked abt in the earlier times..

well, those pointers that have been mentioned are not limited to itself, but these are the ones that popped into my head first, hence listed down for memorial =) aww dont be disappointed.

3 of the 三楼三号 guys

missing in the 三楼三号 is the other Mr Da.. a bunch of cheery pple. and one of whom likes to comment about me wearing my black gloves (yea, thats when winter is over - but still in the cool season). my 杀手 gloves. lol~ forgot how it started tho. bleah

the food..
*no pics for these.. coz haven upload yet.. might update this section when i've uploaded the pics if i find any..*

in the beginning, i had some difficulty accepting the food there.. imagine being welcomed to SH with cold soya drink and cold 油条 and yet with the Office pple saying that it is one of the standard breakfast there.. luckily i came to realise not. oh, talk abt breakfast, i loveeee the sushi roll that is sold near Fudan. my favourite of all. its not simply sushi that you can imagine yea.. its with the red rice (i think its 麦), and fried crispy 油条 inside, with sugar and and some 咸菜, and a choice of whether to add egg/sausage, and/or wrap with seaweed - which i always will have the seaweed wrap. and it only cost $0.60 SGD. omg. i'll buy whenever i see that, and the stall near my sch is the best of all. okie, enough of it, the second best breakfast will be 沙县… the 福建 ones which are populated ard the city =)

oh yeah, the food there is superrrr salty and oily. luckily i had time to accustom into it, tho i still took quite some time to.. every dinner is usually 外买 (the actual term is 外送 coz they 外出 of their stall to 送 to us. 外买 actually means the same as our 打包 of food). of coz, there were the times we cooked. the upz period was a period where we cooked twice/thrice a wk for a few wks, then, we got busy/lazy.. hahahah

oh yeah, but the food there is cheap, say, we can enjoy a great steamboat - which we had on our first night of arrival - for only ard $6SGD ! omg. that is like our local food court price?? got a little shocked when i realised that i can no longer buy a plate of chicken rice at 3SGD from food courts. sobs. oh and the burger meal, at this place called Blue Frog near 正大.. fabulous.. and upon discount, its only 8SGD! no 17% tax, english speaking waiters/-tresses, and good service attitude. how often can you incorporate cheap and good service here in my home land? sigh.

and there's 苹果园.. that's the name of a chain stall that sells bread (like bread talk). but their bread is, woah, fabulous. i even wanna buy it back to sing you know. but there just isnt one at 浦东.. oh man, they shld have one beside the Meglev, and one at the airport for fans like me. lol~

the POI - places of interest ...

okie, this of coz is a personal reflection, hence, the following is according to what i perceived.

1) the Bund/外滩 . standard POI. i went there, hmm, 4-5 times? there was once i was there at 外滩 to 散心 walking up and down the entire stretch took us some 1hr? okay, there's no sand, but there's the nice wind and calming water (tho busy crowd).. that was the only time that place had a vivid impression on me.. oh yeah, okay, there was another time when one of our 三号人 bought the kiddy skates/roller blades from one of the 'sales person'. damn cute of her, to playishly wanna sell it back to another sales person coz the lady offered a price higher than the one she had used to buy her pair. hahaha!

the Bund..

2) fudan. dont play play okie, we studied at the tallest school building of the entire SH wor.. that building is 25 stories high, almost all levels have tut/seminar rooms. cool man, the environment outside looks like Harvard. okie, i know, i need pics up soon . hahaha!

3) 正大. almost scared of the place, coz it is super big!! omg. and there was one period where i've been there very often. oh, but i have a favourite shop there, fav of all the shops in SH, and that is a puzzle shop that sells puzzles with 绘画 themes. got jimmy and little prince and 比纳派 themes! thanks to oli's company, i had prepared money to shop there, but but, it turned out that i mis-remembered the rates and it was more ex than i thgt. so... sigh.

4) QPL!! *nxt section*

shopping!!

一口价…… 诚心价…… yeah, thats what we often hear when we shop ard in SH.. not sure abt other states tho.. and the following are our usual shopping spots..

1) QPL! yes, its abbrevs for 七浦路. just look at how the outside is. its actually not one building, but many many buildings in that one small area. and the insides, woah, messy but with their respective shops defined. one can easily spend a whole afternoon in one building - and being lost there. hahahah!

scary huh?

2) 金桥. finally got to go there on our last month after monthssss of speaking of visiting. but too bad that by then, the 路边摊 has all gone, probably swept off by the police there. sobs. heard of this other similar place called 虹桥体育场, but no chance to go.. well, i guess i'm simply not as adventurous as mama.

3) Tao Bao!! all who stays at the Yellow land for a substantial period of time shld know abt this. its a huge online market, yeah, its a dot com, that sells almost anything that can be used. even if you're not there, maybe you can spare a min or two to look at the site now? hahahha! miss those days where we'll jsut surf ard thinking to buy this and that. woah!

4) book shopping! okay this is random, but i've bought quite alot of books, and this is with credits to mr Grey who was my tour guide with the map equiped. hahahha! i enjoyed the sessions, and if you last through all the lengthiness from the top to read this, i'll add to everyone that i'm sorry in the times that i had been/seem fierce. hehehe! it did shock me that once when grey sigh with relieve outside the 批发 near fudan.. the mighty grey of all! hahhaha well you shld know that i wasnt on my up-side in that period.. >.<

the times..

Mayday concert.. the first concert i've ever been to.. and the only till now. and cheapest too, in comparison to the rates in SG. imagine going for one by a popular band at only 30SGD?! and its meaningful considering that its one day before May Day. had wanted to go for Eason's one too, and its really a pity that i decided to give it a miss. too bad i didnt find the company in time. sigh.

chitchattokcok.. at 新天地, at Starbucks, at lounges of our hostels whilst on travel trips, at the guys place back in SH, in my room.. a randomness in it but really wonderful memories. of coz, memories are not supposed to be hugged on tight, but those are the really carefree period that i miss... with the guys drinking beer and we girl(s) drinking coke. hahahha! i'm healthy ookie.

the transports..

lets see, in SH, we have subway, buses, cabs, tricycles, and 黑车s & 黑bikes that are available for public to call for. though its one of the most expensive of all cities (maybe even more than NJ and BJ), the starting rate of cabs are priced at $2.20 but jumps at lower speed and lower cost rate than here in SG. i remember that time it took me 20bucks to get to the airport.. i thought that was ex. so near yet so far. but if we share cost, travelling in cab is actually not ex.. but of coz, we'll want to save.

of all the 'public' transports available, the only i have not tried is the 黑bikes, of which it is motocycles but available for public to hop on (and they're drive off immediately). there were the times when we went back home late, and saw so many of the 黑bikes and tricycles parked right inside the MRT indoor area right outside the gantry. oh my tian. the look of it just make me feel so unsafe. maybe i should dig up the pic of that and upload soon >.<

but can you imagine, there is no MRT other than in BJ and NJ (and of coz SH). there isnt MRT even in SuZ! okay, that city is actually not big. and in a bigger city such as Yunnan, the spots are linked by long-distance buses (up to 10 hrs!) and train rides (that actually link the whole of the Yellow land). yup, and 西安 isnt actually big. oh yeah, one point to note, the NJ MRT chip is so cute. instead of using cards, they have plastic coin-like-chips to scan upon entry and to put in a slot upon exit. damn cute lar.

the weather..

brr, it was winter when we first arrived, of which its first drop of whiteness came shortly in afew days after we landed in the Yellow land. soon, the spot on the yellow land which we are at was filled with a whiteness that was said to be much more than that in the 1984 - i hope i didnt rembr the yr wrongly. we were soon equiped with the necessary devices against the cold, and the result...

notice how bright the day is, but actually hidden behind that is the unseen cold and wind that bites into the humanly flesh. we were at 大拇指广场 that day outside a 汤圆 stall. hahahha yeah, remember the greedy us exchanging namecards (that does not belong to us!) for the warmth in the 汤圆? oops

but prolly due to the weather, and perhaps the less stressed life, i realise a great improvement in my ecze condition, which i really hope to maintain =)

the words..

we developed some special connotations in our stay there.. witchimiya was one of the first. and within the 三号人,there was RS for restless and AL for antisocial, and towards the end, there was BP for bochap, and CP for crap. notice the pattern? hhahaha

the tunnel of life..

and on we go as we travel more in the passage of life, how long will the bonds we have forged carry us through? one of our 三号人 ever commented upon the end of the trip that "曲终人散,树倒猴子跑"…… will i be able to find those same pple whom i share with whilst in the yellow land, to share my sorrows with? thinking back about the question i have posed myself, that given if I know the current outcome of my personal life, would i still have chosen to go? this question... well, mayb i can say that not given the result, I will still go for it. i'm sure i wont be any much happier if i stayed, but the end result... well, guess this question will still remain as a question for this settlement period...

GIP 7. memories and all.

goodbye sh. goodbye to you too.

*tonight i hope not to have insomia*
